The purpose of the SGMA is
to maintain a Southern Gospel Music Hall of Fame and Museum for the
historic preservation of the accomplishments of our music, its people and
its message.
We believe Southern Gospel Music is the musical arm of our Lord's
evangelist church, without regard to denomination. Therefore, it is our
job to use all means available to us to praise and spread the name of
Jesus Christ through Southern Gospel Music.
On April 17, 1999, the
Southern Gospel Music Hall of Fame and Museum opened in Dollywood in
Pigeon Forge, Tennessee.

OAK RIDGE BOYS TO RECEIVE 2012 SGMA
JAMES D. VAUGHAN IMPACT AWARD
PIGEON FORGE, Tenn.—The
multi-award winning Oak Ridge Boys, will receive the 2012 James
D. Vaughan Impact Award on October 3 during a special ceremony at
Dollywood at the Southern Gospel Music Association’s (SGMA) annual
Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony and Singing News Fan
Awards.
When told of the news, Duane Allen lead singer for the Oaks said,
“It is a huge honor for The Oak Ridge Boys to be presented with
the James D. Vaughan Impact Award. Southern style gospel music is
the foundation of harmony which is the sound of The Oak Ridge
Boys. We all grew up loving the great gospel quartets and gospel
music. We are very humbled to have been chosen to receive this
award and look forward to its presentation at Dollywood October
3rd”.

Group members Duane Allen, William Golden, Joe Bonsall and Richard
Sterban will be on hand to accept the award which is named in
honor of James D.
Vaughan, a Southern gospel music pioneer and one of the genre’s
founders. Past
recipients include Bill Gaither, James Blackwood, Les Beasley, Bob
Brumley, Mosie Lister, Paul Heil, Eva Mae LeFevre, J.G. Whitfield,
Lari Goss, Barbara Mandrell, Dolly Parton and the Statler
Brothers.
“The name Oak Ridge has long been associated with gospel music.
Even today the Oaks are still delivering the gospel sound to their
audiences in their own inimitable fashion. Their endeavors to

makes us proud to honor them with the James D. Vaughan Impact
Award”, said Charlie Waller, Executive Director of the SGMA.

The group was founded in the 1940s as the Oak Ridge Quartet. They
became popular in southern gospel during the 1950s. Their name was
officially changed to the Oak Ridge Boys in the early 1960s.
This group was one of the all-time favorite quartets in gospel music
history and by 1973, began to make their entry into country music
by signing with Columbia Records. The Boys have enjoyed 25 top ten
singles, including 13 number one hits. They continue to tour and
record today. Their most popular gospel songs included “I Know,”
“King Jesus” and the ever popular, “Jesus Is Coming Soon,” written
by SGMA Hall of Fame member, the late R.E. Winsett.
The SGMA Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony/Singing News Fan
Awards take place October 3, 2012 at DP’s Celebrity Theatre at

Charlie, it's Friday morning and I wanted
to say "thank you" for the great honor given to my father,
Doyle, at the SGMA Hall of Fame awards show. I appreciate
your hard work to put together that wonderful video of
him. I didn't even know that there was such a video. My
sister and I would love to have a copy. At present, we
have nothing on tape or dvd and if that could be available
to us, I would be grateful.
